The quick answer
The three things most likely to trip you up when you move to Oʻahu are your car, your pets, and your monthly bills:
- Car: Matson's published rate to ship a standard vehicle from Long Beach or Oakland to Honolulu is $1,790 (effective June 7, 2026). Matson has also suspended shipping electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles (Matson). Once your car arrives, you have 30 days to register it or get an out-of-state permit (HRS §286-54).
- Pets: Dogs and cats that meet every requirement can be released directly at the Honolulu airport for $185. The 5-Day-or-Less program costs $244, and full 120-day quarantine costs $1,080 (Hawaiʻi Dept. of Agriculture & Biosecurity).
- Bills: A typical 500 kWh electric bill on Oʻahu is $246.44 (October 2026) (Hawaiian Electric).

Aloha, I'm Holly Shankleton, a realtor with eXp Realty on Oʻahu. When families move here, the surprises are almost never the big things. Usually it's the paperwork deadline nobody mentioned, or the car that can't get on the boat. So this is the checklist I wish everyone had before they booked their flights.
3–6 months out: pets (start here first!)
If you're bringing a dog or cat, this is the longest lead-time item on your whole list. Hawaiʻi is rabies-free, and the state's rules are strict.
What the 2026 pet quarantine fees look like
According to the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity's Animal Quarantine Branch (DAB Animal Quarantine):
The key timing rules
- Your pet needs a passing FAVN rabies antibody test, and it has to arrive at least 30 days after that test. It also has to be at least 30 days past its most recent rabies vaccination (DAB).
- For direct airport release, the Animal Quarantine Station has to receive your original documents at least 10 days before arrival. Only the health certificate can travel with your pet (DAB 5-Day-or-Less FAQ).
- If the paperwork has a mistake, a document is missing, or the inspector finds fleas or ticks, your pet goes to the main quarantine station in Hālawa Valley until everything is resolved.
My tip: Download the official checklist, set a calendar reminder for each step, and ask your vet whether they've done Hawaiʻi paperwork before.
2–3 months out: decide what to do with your car
Shipping a car to Hawaiʻi in 2026
Matson's published rates, effective June 7, 2026 (Matson):
- Long Beach or Oakland to Honolulu: $1,790
- Long Beach or Oakland to Hilo, Kahului, or Nāwiliwili: $2,600
- Honolulu to Long Beach or Oakland (if you ever move back): $1,020
That rate covers standard passenger vehicles up to 21′8″ long × 8′ wide × 7′ high. Matson's page also lists port-specific size limits, so check yours. The state also charges a small invasive-species fee on shipments to Hawaiʻi.
What nobody tells you: EVs and plug-in hybrids
Matson says it has suspended acceptance of used or new electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids because of safety concerns about large lithium-ion batteries (Matson). If you drive an EV, call carriers before you plan around shipping it. Selling it on the mainland and buying here may turn out to be simpler.
Registering your car once it lands
The State gives you 30 days after you start driving here to register the vehicle in Hawaiʻi or apply for an out-of-state vehicle permit (HRS §286-54). On Oʻahu, the usual order is (JBPHH Vehicle Registration):
- Get a Hawaiʻi safety inspection. Without local registration it'll technically "fail," and that's expected.
- Bring your bill of lading (it shows the arrival date and VIN), your current out-of-state registration, and the inspection paperwork to a Satellite City Hall or the DMV.
- Go back to the inspection station to finish the safety check and get your sticker.
1 month out: housing and utilities
Electricity
Hawaiian Electric serves Oʻahu. Effective October 2026 residential rates run about 45.8¢–49.5¢ per kWh, and a typical 500 kWh bill is $246.44 (HECO). Set up service in your name before move-in day, and ask your landlord or seller for past bills so you know what to expect.
Water, sewer, and condo fees
In many condos, the monthly maintenance fee already covers water and sewer, and sometimes more. In a single-family home, you'll usually set those up yourself with the Board of Water Supply. Read every lease or association budget line by line so you're not paying twice.
Renting first is smart
I almost always suggest renting for a few months before you buy, so you can test your commute and get a feel for neighborhoods. HUD's FY2026 Fair Market Rent for a 2-bedroom in Urban Honolulu is $2,642/month (HUD USER). My guide to the best Oʻahu neighborhoods for families is coming soon on this blog.
Move week: the extra stuff
Ship less than you think
Everything you ship costs money, and humidity is hard on particleboard furniture and electronics. Many people sell their bulky furniture on the mainland and buy here instead.
Build your hurricane kit early
Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and Hawaiʻi Emergency Management recommends being "2 Weeks Ready" with a 14-day emergency kit (HI-EMA).
Price insurance before you commit to a home
On Oʻahu, hurricane coverage is often a separate policy. For one sample home, the State's comparison guide shows hurricane-only premiums ranging from about $862 to $4,974 a year (DCCA Insurance Division).
